ANNEX 1: SUMMARY SOCIO-DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF ALOKOLUM COMMUNITY

General Description: the infrastructure ranges from permanent houses of different sizes and grades to temporary grass-thatched houses according to the different of socio-economic grades of the households; the environment is generally clean and well-conserved, and the ecosystem remains mostly raw and conserved, with an abundance of natural trees, birds and creatures, and even a few wild animals still found there.
Livelihoods: the mainstay of livelihoods in Alokolum Village are agricultural practice (which is mainly subsistence type), petty trade of a wide variety of goods, local passenger transportation using motorbikes, and a few small brick-laying projects here and there. The few residents who are employed are mainly teachers, technicians, health workers.
Access to Social Services: within five-kilometer walking distance can be found a big missionary National Referral Hospital, one Major Seminary, one Minor Seminary, three Primary Schools and some two pre-Primary Schools, one medium trading center and two small trading centers.
Vulnerabilities: pregnant women and lactating mothers, newborn babies (especially sick newborns, premature and underweight), young children (infants and under-fives, especially the malnourished and the sick), orphans and child-headed families, persons with disabilities, the chronically ill members of the communities (including those with non-communicable diseases and mental illnesses), and the elderly persons.
ANNEX 2: Climate Action and Environmental Conservation at Community Level
Appropriate waste management: Restricted use of plastics; Promotion of recycling and burying and restrictions on burning of waste materials;
Ecological conservation: Promoting agroforestry; Tree planting; Prevention and control of bush fires; Promotion of the use of natural fertilizers; Controlled animal grazing; Ban on charcoal burning;
Energy conservation: Use of efficient cook stoves and pressure cookers; Avoid unnecessary cooking of foods that can be eaten raw or sun-dried; Promote the use of food flasks for heat conservation;
Promoting the use of renewable energy: Community-managed solar systems; Introduction of solar-driven motor vehicles; Promoting the use of fossil fuel; Promoting alternative cooking fuel to firewood and charcoal e.g. cooking gas; Encouraging walking or the use of bicycles for short distance movements;
Anticipated Benefits: Reduced energy costs, controlled pollution and a cleaner environment.
Impact: Positive contribution to reduction of global warming; Improved health status of the members of the community.
ANNEX 3: Security and Protection of the Members of the Communities and Their Properties
Introduce and Implement Community By-Laws:
Support Community Policing Systems: Zero Tolerance for Abuse and Discrimination: Promote Gender- and Disability-Sensitive Services and Infrastructure: Solar Security Lighting: Accident Prevention.
Anticipated Benefits: All members of the community enjoy a status of inclusiveness and peace of mind.
Impact: Significant reduction of crime rates in the community.
ANNEX 4: Social Services for and Welfare of the Members of the Communities
Good Health and Nutrition: Use the Primary Health Care approach to promote health and well-being, prevent disease, treat and rehabilitate the sick, including those affected by chronic medical conditions, stress, mental illnesses and substance abuse. Access to Quality Education; Access to Community Water and Sanitation; Care for the Elderly; Care for Disabled Persons and Other Vulnerable Groups; Leisure and Entertainment; Freedom of Worship.
Anticipated Benefits: Better quality of life for all members of the community; Improved safety, well-being and peace of mind; Elevated social status of all the members of the community.
Impact: Improved quality of life; A resilient community.
ANNEX 5: Livelihoods and Assets in the Communities
This includes a wide range of small- and medium-scale income generating activities and acquisition of assets and properties through:
Technical Support: Project Proposal development, Project management and financial management skills;
Marketing of Products: Conduct market surveys; Encourage Cooperative Societies; Facilitate advertisements; Promote value-addition; Price control where possible;
Provide Storage and Logistic Support: Promote cost-saving through centralised negotiation of charges, pooled storage and transportation arrangements.
Anticipated Benefits: Increased turn-over of products and services, reduced storage and transportation costs hence better profitability of the IGAs; Improved knowledge and skills of members, hence better sustainability.
Impact: Improved quality of life; A resilient community.
ANNEX 6: Capacity Building
ALODI will, on request of its members, provide Technical Support to build capacity in the proper management of their projects and assets, including key aspects of General Management as well as Financial Management. Other more complex aspects such as legal matters will be handled by the Legal Adviser of the Co Ltd.
Anticipated Benefits: Members of the community have capacity to manage their projects, assets and finances.
Impact: Improved and sustainable livelihoods, assets and financial management.
ANNEX 7: Social and Behavioural Change
Like all other community-based and community-driven initiatives and interventions, the success of the ALODI support will depend heavily on the positive Social and Behaviors of the members of the community themselves. For that reason, ALODI will engage Social and Behaviors Change Specialist and/or Consultants more or less on a continuous basis to ensure that these changes are effected and sustained. The recruitment and active engagement of these Consultants/Specialist is therefore top priority for ALODI Co Ltd.
Anticipated Benefits: Gradual and systematic social and behavior change in the community for all the other components of the services and interventions.
